October Weather in Iceland – The Facts

We don’t factor in the wind in those numbers I mentioned earlier, so it will 100% feel colder.
October is a transition month from autumn to winter, and the weather can be all over the place.
And then it depends on where in the country you are.
In the south, by the coast, you can expect it to be a bit milder but it has consistent wind
While inland or up north, it’ll be colder.
You’ll see a lot of comments on the internet mentioning that they did not expect the wind to be this strong.
Don’t’ be one of those people!

In October, the likelihood of storms increases.
So don’t be surprised if there is a yellow, orange, or a red warning.

Which is why you need to be well dressed!
What to Wear in Iceland in October

It’s always important to be wearing the right clothes in Iceland, no matter the month.
But it’s extra important for the Autmn and winter months.
So let’s start with the base layers.
Base layer
Thermal underwear are.a.must.
I like merino wool, but synthetic is just fine!
As long as you have it!
If you don’t want to buy thermals, then a thick t-shirt and light, breathable pants are a good option.
Though merino wool thermal underwear is the best!
Mid layers
Now for mid layers you have a few options.
- Fleece sweater (breathable, warm, dries fast) – Optimal
- I really like this option
- Wool sweater (Breathable, warm, driest fast) – Good
- Hoodie/sweater from a sports brand (not ideal, but can work)
Outer layer
There are a few options for outer layers as well.
- Winter parka – warm, windproof, highly water-resistant
- Perfect for winter in my opinion
- Shell – breathable, windproof, highly water-resistant
- This is not as warm as the other two options, so you’ll need more layers
- Puffer – Warm, windproof (sometimes)
- Don’t recommend this one as the main outer layer
- Outdoor pants – Windproof, breathable, water-resistant
- No need to wear full on ski pants, in fact, that might be a bit too much once you start walking.
Footwear & Accessories
Hiking boots are mandatory!
They need to be able to handle a lot of water, have ankle support and good grip.
You might get away with trail shoes or you might not, it really depends on how bad this particular October is.
Gloves – medium-thick
Beanie – regular beanie is fine
Hand and feet warmers
Base layer + mid layer (You can double stack, but I don’t recommend it unless it’s suuuuuuper cold) + good outdoor layers = a good time in Iceland
