Here’s what you need to know👇 Is Iceland cold? yes

Here’s what you need to know👇
Is Iceland cold?
yes and no.
on paper, the temperature doesn’t seem that bad. When we get into deep winter from end of November until late March, Reykjavík will dance from around 0°C to 8°C. a few degrees above in the day and a few below at night. Up north in Akureyri it’s a bit colder. This is without the windchill.

But Iceland loves a surprise. In December 2022 Reykjavík hit -15°C, the coldest December here in over 100 years. Then on Christmas Day 2025 it was 16.5°C in Akureyri 🤯 Bye bye white Christmas.

🌑 Is it dark all day?
Nope! But it’s close, On the shortest day the sun rises at 11:22 and sets at 15:29. But you get light from around 10:00 to 17:00, and the sun stays so low it’s basically golden hour all day 🌅 Perfect for photos. And the days grow fast, by mid March you’ve got almost 12 hours of daylight.

❄️ Does it snow?
Yes, but it comes and goes, and the north gets more of it. Since we hover around 0°C you’ll get snow, rain, slush and ice, sometimes all in one day 😅 Ice is the real thing to watch, so leave the sneakers at home and bring good boots.

💨 Is it windy?
Oh yes. Oh boy, yes! This is the real reason why Iceland is cold. Wind is the real boss of Icelandic winter. Storm gusts can go over 180 km/h! The Met Office uses yellow, orange and red warnings, so check them every day. And please hold your car door with both hands when you open it, and park facing the wind

🚗 Is it safe to drive?
Yes, if you plan for it. Your rental will have winter tyres. Roads can close during storms and the F-roads are closed all winter. Check road.is, vedur.is and safetravel.is every morning before you head out.

🧥 So what should you pack?
It’s the wind and the wet that get you, not crazy cold. Think winter parka, shell pants, good boots, a hat that covers your ears, gloves and a neck warmer. Nail that and you’ll love it out there ❄️
