Tours

Ever wondered what the inside of a volcano looks like? This extraordinary tour takes you deep inside a dormant volcano, through its top crater and down into the vast magma chamber that once blazed with molten lava.

About the experience

Your journey begins with a scenic 3.5 km hike (around 45 minutes) across uneven volcanic terrain to reach the crater. From there, you’ll descend 120 meters into the heart of Þríhnúkagígur via an open cable lift.

Inside, you’ll find a space the size of three basketball courts, large enough to fit the Statue of Liberty. Here, molten magma once swirled during an eruption, but instead of collapsing (as most magma chambers do), this one drained completely — leaving behind a breathtakingly empty “plumbing system” unlike almost anywhere else on Earth.

This is one of the few places in the world where you can step inside a volcano’s magma chamber, a rare geological wonder.
